In 2016, a majority of the government of Luxembourg voted to constitute a gender quota in the electoral act. 'A new law adopted on 15 December 2016 ensures that political parties meet a minimum 40-per-cent quota for women in their lists for national elections and a 50-per-cent quota for European elections.' However, the law is predicted to be implemented in 2019 and hence was not implemented in the parliamentary elections of 2018.

In 2016 Luxembourg introduced a law which states 40% of politicians on lists for legislative and European elections should be women, to improve political parity at a national level. Parties which do not comply with the quota are financially penalised through the amount of state funding they receive. Parties with a less than 30% female representation on their electoral lists risk losing 75% of the government's financial support (Luxembourg Times, 2018).
