When an initiative proposal and an alternative proposal are put to the vote on the same day, what choices does the voter have?

Legislation does not specify aprocedure for valid alternative proposals to be put forward.  However, article 55(1) of the CitizensInitiated Referenda Act 1993 allows for two or more indicative referenda to beheld on the same day. While such a provision allows for the possibility of analternative proposal to be put to a vote on the same day, the act does notspecify what choices the voter has with regards to the proposals.

55Two or more referenda

(1)Two or moreindicative referenda may be held on the same day.

(2)One or moreindicative referenda may be held during the voting period for 1 or morereferenda (within the meaning of the Referenda (Postal Voting) Act 2000).
