Election offenses ofa criminal nature are defined in the Election Law. Violations areinvestigated under the supervision of the prosecutor in a correspondingjurisdiction upon reports or referral to the police, or upon the initiative ofthe prosecutor based on public reports. The investigation of election offensesmay be taken over by higher-level prosecutors if the offense occurred inmultiple jurisdictions or where the investigation requires more resources thenare available to the lower-level prosecutor. Although election offenses are punishablewith up to five years in prison, the vast majority of cases are settled throughthe issuing of a fine by the prosecutor.
