Is technology used for identifying voters at polling stations (electronic poll books)?

During the enrolment, the voter is assigned to only one polling station. Before the elections, the register is closed and the voter distribution becomes available in a database. This database will be accessed by a system running in a desktop computer to load the voting machine with the voters of that polling station.
