The guidelines for the identification of voters are summarized in section L78 of the electoral code:

 

Article L78

Upon entering the voting room the voter must present their voter registration card which is stamped or referred to in the box provided for this purpose with reference to the date of the election. Voters must also prove his identity by presenting one of the documents listed in section L21. The voter shall affix the stamp of his left thumb in the place reserved for this purpose on the electoral roll for trimming or signature.
