In late 2013 an Online Voting Working Party was established at the direction of the Minister of Local Government to consider and recommend options for introducing online voting for local authority elections.  The working party is scheduled to report to the Minister later this year on the feasibility of having online voting in local government elections (the next local government elections are scheduled for 2016).

While e-voting at parliamentary elections is not used at present in New Zealand there are two new services the Electoral Commission will be providing at the 2014 general election that will assist voters who are not able to vote in person at a voting place.  Dictation voting by telephone will be available for blind and disabled voters who are not able to vote without assistance.  The Commission will also be offering a service for overseas voters to return their completed voting papers via a secure upload service on the Commission’s website.

The 2014 general election was the first time that overseas voters were able to return their voting papers by securely uploading them to the Electoral Commission’s Upload Voting Paper (UVP) system. See the sources for more information about developments in New Zealand.
