At the announcement of the national and provincial election results in 2009 in South Africa, the then President of the Republic of South Africa challenged the Electoral Commission to examine the concept of electronic voting technologies. The South African Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs, to which the Commission reports on its work, has also shown an interest in the subject of e-voting. Subsequently, the Commission commissioned secondary research into the international experience of e-voting.
