Section 179 of the Electoral Act provides for thedeclaration of the official results  http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1993/0087/latest/DLM309893.html

TheElectoral Referendum Act 2010 made provision for the counting and reporting ofthe results of the referendum held with the election at the same time as theannouncement of the official results for the general election.  The preliminary results of early referendumvotes (i.e. issued before election day) were published on election night within4?hours.

 

Comment

At the 2011 general election 99.96% ofpreliminary results were reported by 11.30pm on election night.  Polling on election day ends at 7pm.

For the referendum (2011) the final results were established after 14 days.
