Electoral system for national legislature
Suriname
Constitution of Suriname, 1987
Article 59
59.1 The National Assembly consists of 51 members chosen by district on the basis of general, free and secret elections by virtue of the system of proportionate representation on the highest number of average and preferential votes.
Suriname has an open-list proportional representation system where 51 members are elected in 10 multi-member constituencies containing between two to seventeen seats. Voters vote for only one party list and may cast a single preference vote for a candidate on that list.
Seats are allocated with the d’Hondt formula.
