Previously from 1972 to 1989, the electoral system used involved voters electing regional councils, which in turn elected the members of the National People’s Assembly.
The 1994 elections was the first elections conducted under a multi-party democracy. The members of the National Assembly are elected through a proportional representation system on closed party lists comprising 100 mandates for the 27 national constituencies.
Seats are allocated through the d’Hondt formula.
