Electoral system for national legislature

The 1992 elections was the first elections Mali conducted under the new electoral system, after 3 decades of authoritarian rule. The Two-round majority-runoff system that emerged was a compromise aimed both at preserving the political power of the five major parties while creating electoral opportunities for numerous smaller ones. Furthermore, the electoral system was thought to encourage coalitions in the second round between large and small parties.
