Article 109. Election

109.1 The individual heading the national list of the political party or coalition of political parties which receives the most votes in general elections held under the terms of Article 142 onwards of this Constitution shall be elected President of the Republic and Head of the Executive.

109.2 The individual heading the list is identified on the ballot paper for the benefit of the voters.

Comment

Constitutional Amendment of 2010 has changed the way the President is elected in Angola. Each political party must submit a list of their National Assembly candidates to the constitutional court. The person heading the list of the winning party is thus automatically elected as president.
