Electoral system for the president

Article 26. (1) The President of the Republic orthe President of the Government of Southern Sudan shall be elected by a voterwho shall cast one vote for one candidate to the office of the President of theRepublic or the President of the Government of Southern Sudan. A candidateshall be declared elected if he or she obtains fifty percent of the valid votesplus one vote or more, in accordance with Article 54 of the Constitution orArticle 99 of the Interim Southern Sudan Constitution 2005, as the case may be.

(2) In circumstances where no candidate according tosub-section (1) has secured the required number of votes, the Commission shallconduct election between the two candidates who obtained the highest number ofvalid votes within sixty days of the polling day. The candidate who obtains thehighest number of votes shall be declared elected.
