Article 97
Membership of the National Assembly
97.1 The National Assembly consists of—
- Two hundred and ninety members, each elected by the registered voters of single member constituencies;
- Forty-seven women, each elected by the registered voters of the counties, each county constituting a single member constituency;
- Twelve members nominated by parliamentary political parties according to their proportion of members of the National Assembly in accordance with Article 90, to represent special interests including the youth, persons with disabilities and workers; and
- The Speaker, who is an ex officio member.
Since the introduction of the new Constitution, there are a total of 350 parliamentarians elected in various ways. The new system created 290 parliamentarians who are directly elected by constituents in single member districts under the first-past-the-post system. Additionally, there are 47 directly elected women representing each county in single member constituencies under the first-past-the-post system.
There are 12 reserved spots for special interest groups. These seats are nominated proportionally by a party list system. These seats give underrepresented groups such as the disabled and the youth in the political system. Lastly, the members of each body will elect a Speaker who is not currently a member.
