Commonwealth arrangements

13.1 Disputesmay arise over the results of a federal election, or with regard to a number ofprocedural elements of the electoral process administered by the AustralianElectoral Commission (AEC).

13.5 The Courtof Disputed Returns is given broad powers to consider a petition. Subject to theother requirements in the Electoral Act, the Court may consider the merits ofthe case, without being restricted by legal technicalities.

The ElectoralAct requires the Court to make its decision on a petition as quickly as is reasonable in thecircumstances. Furthermore, decisions of the Court of Disputed Returns arefinal and are not subject to review.
