On 12 July, International IDEA and the Lab of Democratic Transformations, will discuss the findings of a new study on the quality of local democracy in Ukraine.

International IDEA held an online panel discussion on the latest Global State of Democracy (GSoD) Indices findings on the six countries in the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia) on 10 February 2023.

One of the most concerning developments in today’s global state of democracy is the widespread shrinking of civic space. In various countries, civil society has been curtailed by governments who use oppressive laws, cut off funding and harass civic actors who speak out in defence of democracy.

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the Netherlands announced today a six-year, 12-million-euro agreement to support International IDEA’s critical democracy work.

With the global refugee population reaching an estimated 22.5 million by mid-2017, compared to 10.4 million in 2011, the world is seeing an unprecedented increase in the number of refugees and asylum seekers. More than half of the global refugee population comes from only three countries: Syria, Afghanistan, and South Sudan.

On 25 November, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), in partnership with Vytautas Magnus University and the European Humanities University, will hold International Conference “Constitutionalism in Europe: Current Challenges and Prospects for the Future”. 

Uncontrolled finances can rob democracy of its unique strengths: political equality, the empowerment of the disenfranchised, and the ability to manage societal conflicts peacefully. The integrity of democratic process and representative bodies of government remains heavily affected by the lack of transparency in political and campaign finance.

In his State of the Union 2017 address, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker stated that the “Union needs to take a democratic leap forward”, and referred explicitly to the role of European political parties in the next European Parliament elections, new rules on the financing of political parties and foundations, transnational lists, and the Commission’s Citizens Dialogues and democratic conventions.

This free, online workshop will bring together academics and practitioners to discuss current challenges of electoral integrity around the globe, addressing questions such as: What role do elections play in this debate on democratic backsliding? What new challenges are elections facing? Have the practical challenges of organizing an election during a pandemic proven too strong?

The Office of International IDEA to the European Union, with the support of the Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the European Union, will organize a Roundtable on "The 2030 Agenda: Addressing corruption in support of democratic governance and sustainable development".
