International IDEA held an online panel discussion on the latest Global State of Democracy (GSoD) Indices findings on the six countries in the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia) on 10 February 2023.
One of the most concerning developments in today’s global state of democracy is the widespread shrinking of civic space. In various countries, civil society has been curtailed by governments who use oppressive laws, cut off funding and harass civic actors who speak out in defence of democracy.
The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the Netherlands announced today a six-year, 12-million-euro agreement to support International IDEA’s critical democracy work.

With the global refugee population reaching an estimated 22.5 million by mid-2017, compared to 10.4 million in 2011, the world is seeing an unprecedented increase in the number of refugees and asylum seekers. More than half of the global refugee population comes from only three countries: Syria, Afghanistan, and South Sudan.

What new challenges are elections facing? Have the practical challenges of organizing an election during a pandemic proven too strong?
