France is committed to reducing  its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels) and to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In addition, the country has endorsed the European Green Deal and adopted a related Energy and Climate Law in 2019. However, France is experiencing significant internal 'green backlash' and the recent right-wing surge at the European Elections makes climate and environmental policies a particularly controversial issue.
