Democracy in Central America, particularly in the northern zone, is at a critical juncture. It is hard to find another region in the world with such a steep democratic erosion process: of the six countries that make up Central America, four have experienced democratic backsliding, either downgrading to hybrid regimes or to authoritarian governments, according to International IDEA’s Global State of Democracy 2022 report.
